Nintendo: Twilight Princess 'Starting Point' for New Zelda

Link's next Wii adventure will owe a lot to the one before it, according to director Eiji Aonuma.

Nintendo has remained relatively quiet about Wii's next Legend of Zelda game. Company demi-god Shigeru Miyamoto spoke briefly about the adventure sequel at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2009 and also showed off the first snippet of artwork for the still-untitled project. Since then, the publisher has dropped a few more details, first confirming that Link's swordplay would be enhanced by Wii MotionPlus and also revealing that it plans to alter the traditional "flow" of the series.

Now comes a new quote for fans to ponder endlessly.

Will the next Zelda owe a lot to Twilight Princess?
Speaking to IGN about the anticipated title, director Eiji Aonuma said, "With Twilight Princess, we challenged ourself to create the most vast and realistic world the series had ever seen, but we don't feel that we were able to fully complete this objective. With that as a starting point for our improvements to the series in the future, we are of course working on a new game for Wii."

Might the forthcoming Zelda title, which is purportedly set to be unveiled at next year's E3, be the Wii equivalent of Majora's Mask?

Says Aonuma: "For any game to be remembered for a long time, just like Ocarina of Time was, the game must give the strong impression that it has set a new starting point for future sequels to build upon. We are working to further improve upon the experiences found in Twilight Princess so that our future games can realize these innovations."

We don't know what any of this really means, but somehow we're excited anyway.
